Dear Parents,
The Abacus is the world's first device used for the purpose of calculations. The Abacus has been in use for several centuries and continues to be used even today despite the availability of many other forms of electronic Calculating devices, mainly because of the several other benefits it offers apart from being just a mode of calculation. Abacus Education is compulsory at school level in some Asian countries like Japan, Malaysia & China. Japan is amongst the most advanced countries in the world in terms of technology, but the Japanese still use the Abacus methods for their Calculation needs. Be it Japanese Engineers, Accountants or even the Traders / Businessmen, all use the Abacus methods while performing any calculation. Thanks to the years of Training & practice of Abacus methods during their school years, the Japanese people are extremely fast when it comes to Calculations involving addition, subtraction, multiplication & division. Their speed is even faster than the time required to do the same calculation using an electronic calculator.
The Abacus is not just a calculating device. Its regular use during pre-primary & primary school years has proved to be extremely beneficial not just for the child's numerical skills but also for development of Logical & Visualisation skills. Our brain is said to be of two parts. The left brain controls the reading, writing, calculations & logical thinking; whereas the right brain is responsible for creativity, three dimensional sense and artistic senses. Both the parts work in co-ordination enabling us to work efficiently. Researchers have proved that the regular training & practice of Abacus calculation methods during early years of a child's life helps develop both the parts of the brain because of use of fingers of both hands on the Abacus for calculation purpose.
The Abacus methods work like an exercise for the brain. With regular practice of the methods, the child's brain gets regular exercise which leads to several indirect benefits like: Improved Concentration, Memory, Visualisation skills, Logical thinking, Grasping power, etc. The direct benefits include the superior numerical skills that the child develops at an early age. Many school children develop fear of Maths when they start dealing with larger numbers in their calculations. But a child who learns the Abacus methods will never get afraid of numbers because he/she masters the skills to handle very large numbers at a very early age. It is felt by many that learning Abacus strengthens the student's sense of number placement value and helps to further a better overall understanding of numbers. It's also a lot of fun.
The Japanese Abacus, or shall we say, the Indian Abacus uses one upper bead and four lower beads on each rod. The value of each lower bead is ‘1’, while the value of the upper bead is ‘5’. The use of the lower beads / upper beads / or a combination of both the lower & upper beads help us represent digits from 1 to 9 on every rod. Calculations on the Abacus are done in the form of additions or subtractions with the help of a set of ‘small-friend’ formulae and another set of ‘big-friend’ formulae. All forms of arithmetic calculations, including multiplications & divisions, are done on the Abacus in the form of additions & subtractions. AnkMitra MathsClinic's Abacus programme enables kids, who are in the 6 to 11 years age bracket, to master the art of Abacus Calculations, both Mentally & on Abacus. The Abacus programme at AnkMitra MathsClinic is distributed over 6 levels, with each level lasting a duration of about three months. With each level, the student is taught newer methods with increased number of digits & level of difficulty. With regular practice alone a student is able to master the Abacus methods and the difficulty no more remains a difficulty.
We at AnkMitra MathsClinic are looking forward to spreading the benefits of
Abacus Calculation Methods to more number of children.
